Matthijs De Block

Belgian multidisciplinary artist, lecturer and researcher, Matthijs De Block has built a remarkable practice at the intersection of art, biotechnology, genetics, and society, creating living artworks that challenge how we think about science, ethics, and our relationship with the natural world. From genetically engineering E. coli bacteria to producing serotonin in his acclaimed project "The Greater Gut – Happiness Bacteria", to creating living installations with genetically modified yeast that produce the earthy scent of geosmin in "Soft Sedation", Matthijs transforms complex scientific research into powerful artistic experiences.

His work has been developed through collaborations with leading institutions including Ghent University, KU Leuven, GLUON BXL, Open BioLab Brussels, Waag Society, Institute for Art, Science & Technology and LUCA School of Arts , positioning him as a unique bridge between scientific innovation and public engagement.

His work has been featured by Design Museum Gent, Art Festival Watou, FORMAT at Z33, and covered extensively by leading Belgian media including De Tijd, De Morgen, Gazet van Antwerpen, and DAMN° Magazine and CANVAS TV program ‘De Afspraak’.
